[What he didn’t tell the boy, what none of them were meant to tell him so soon because he wouldn’t have been able to stand it, was that his role was to be an even bigger one than being Master. Hamar was to go far beyond the mere handling of powers used in teaching mystics, beyond powers needed for governing the halls of the academy, even further than the powers used in elementary rituals of death,

– those kinds of death were small deaths, lesser ones, temporary only, not the ultimate one that cancelled soul altogether; people’s souls hovered near their shells for two or three days after they died and could still be brought back. He would learn of the methods of those deaths as a matter of course. Then, after years learning of all their powers, he would be shown what no other majician was ever permitted to know:

How to conduct the Master‘s death!

– When it was time to depart, the Master would ultimately be released from his body into the most exalted existence possible, freed into an even higher dimension than was known by any high majicians. Assistance was needed for the great transition. No ordinary majician no matter how high was ever permitted to learn the parts of the Grande death ritual ahead of the time,

– or to learn the formidable, unimaginable, warfare involved for both the participants!

Hamar would need to encounter many powers first before he was even told about it. He must enter majic’s fantasma, be daunted by its thousand feats and promises, along with its threats and hazards and precise lofty disciplines, and only after he’d tasted the thrill of possible mastery over it all would he be informed of the monstrous task. His mentors would take care that new pride and great fear were held in right tension, and only then would the news of his duty come, a suitable boulder to weigh him down for a very measured, and carefully marked out, escalation ahead.]

Hamar rested as best he could that day. Lessons would begin at dawn.
